The Hillbillies Descend - Some Things Never Change

Well my attitude has changed so I suppose that changes everything.   I used to get so angry at their behaviour in the early years of my marriage but now, I just don't care so much given the state of things here lately.  I was just annoyed, and extremely bored by their visit.
After much questioning I found they would be arriving at around ten, for a short visit, before driving on to Dubbo.  I had a leg of lamb in the freezer, larger than I would normally buy but it was on special, and got that out for our dinner, and luckily I did.  Come 11.40am and they still hadn't arrived, in spite of saying that they had left at 8.30 from Albury, I realised the blueberry muffins I'd made for morning tea weren't going to  cut it, they would be here for lunch, and knowing them, they wouldn't bother bringing anything.  Phill had to run down and get some rolls and cold meat.  I needed to go to the supermarket and when they didn't turn up Josh and I were just getting into the car when they pulled up, so we said a quick hello and left Phill to entertain them (we took our sweet time).  Of course they turned up empty handed, as always.  And they sat.  And sat.  And sat, and the hours ticked by and we wondered when they would leave.  I put the lamb in the oven, then did some vegies, more than I normally would, although still thinking they would leave soon.  They didn't.  Phill finally asked what they were doing, weren't they driving onto Dubbo?  June said to not worry about them staying with us (??? We have no spare bed and nothing had been said about it) that they had booked into a motel before coming to our house.  Why didn't they just say that?  So we hurriedly added more vegies to the dinner and they stayed and ate and drank and still stayed on.  They have both aged so much, and my MIL in particular has grown bitter and dull and is into repeating the same story several times.  I am not being unkind, these people have caused me more grief and unhappiness in the last 20 years or so than anyone else I know.  It will be a long time before they get in my front door again, if ever.  I was raised so differently, you do not visit unannounced, and if expected you show up on time, or advise you will be late, and NEVER arrive, especially at meal times, empty handed.  Even their own son, was angry and annoyed by their behaviour and he was as glad as I was when they finally left.  And the kids, now they're older, noticed and were a bit taken aback by their grandparents' rudeness.  They spent most of the visit in their rooms.
Scout has recovered beautifully from his operation and is as cute and delightful as ever.
Once I get the kids off to school, I have the day to myself, and have a couple of projects I want to get to work on in the house.  The linen cupboard here has big holes cut out on side of the shelves, leaving limited space for storing linen.  I wish I had kept my old pantry it would have been very handy.  I'm going to try to find some pieces of wood to put over the holes, and go right through the cupboard and sort it out, to make things easier to find.  Also the cupboard under the kitchen sink is a terrible mess so I need to rip everything out of there as well and clean it and organise it.  Think I might smudge the house too, after the hillbilly invasion.
We had mice a while back, or at least one, living in the kitchen, we managed to trap it and use peppermint oil soaked cotton balls pushed under everything to deter any more.  We suspected we had more when we saw Harley peering under the dishwasher and looking menacing.  Yesterday I was at my desk and heard her calling Scout, she has a certain type of meow she uses to call her kittens to her, and I jumped up to make sure he wasn't going to try to feed off her and saw Scout in the hall with a little mouse.  She had caught it in the kitchen, and called to him to share it with her, and show him how to deal with these little pests.  Animals continue to surprise me with their intelligence.
Still hot, hot, hot with very little rain.  I won't be sorry to see the Summer end in a couple of weeks.
