For We Are Young and Free

We typically have a bbq at home each year to mark this day.  I am a proud Aussie and wouldn't live anywhere else in the world (even though I've never travelled outside Australia!)
We went down to do some shopping and the town was so quiet and almost all the privately owned businesses were closed.  We went into Rockmans and asked the salesgirl if it was a public holiday and she said no, only Monday was.  She made a good point that really got me thinking.  All towns in NSW have special celebrations to mark Australia Day, usually a free breakfast and other activities for all to enjoy.  Except those who have to work if the day falls on a weekend.  Which means they can't join in the town festivities or even enjoy a celebration lunch with their families at home.  Monday, the public holiday is NOT Australia Day, it's just another bludge day which means nothing.
I think the public holiday should be for EVERY Australian on whatever day of the week January 26th falls.  I feel so strongly about this I'm going to see if I can find, or start, some sort of lobby group.
So we had planned a family day as usual, and I bought everyone's favourites, then Emily asks if she can stay at Sindy's for the night.  For some reason I got really upset but I didn't show it.  I know I am lucky that we still have them around most of the time, at almost 17, and 15 most other teens would be out with their friends all the time.  But I think it just hit me that the day will come when they just won't want to be here with us, even on special occasions.  And that is normal, but it won't be easy.
Josh got his late Christmas present last week, a WiiU, which is actually an amazing thing, and he is in love with it, and still not well, so while he came out and ate with us, he didn't come in the pool or hang out much.  It gave Phill and I a chance to spend some time alone and do some more talking and trying to figure out how we will move forward.  Baby steps.  We are stuck here together for the time being, and I cannot hold grudges or carry on unpleasantness, it just isn't in me and makes me physically ill, so all we can do is the best we have in us at the moment.
We went and had Josh's ultrasound done early Friday morning, then did some shopping in Young.  We had promised to get them what they originally wanted when we could afford it, so Josh got his game console and Em wanted a new Ipod as she has so much music that it won't all fit on her phone.  We couldn't get what we wanted in Young so we ended up driving all the way to Wagga and managed to get everything we wanted at the right price.  I am learning to ask for price matching and cash discounts now where once I wouldn't have dreamed of it.  I got myself a stand for my iPad for the kitchen.  It slots into the cabinet door so it's off the counter and away from splashes and is at eye level for me to read recipes.  I love it!
I just struggled for half an hour to get this freaking photo off my phone.  My camera is playing up, I need to sit down this afternoon and do some playing with all my devices to get them to do what I want them to do.
Em got her senior uniform last week.
I never thought I would see her in it.  We got her some stockings to hide the scars on her legs and it does a fair job although you can still see the cuts at the back.  She asked for some razors to shave her legs, and I know she hasn't done any cutting for months now, so it rattled me when she came out and gave me the packet to keep in case it "triggered" her.  I am proud of her for at least doing that, and I went and got the razor out of their bathroom when she'd finished her shower.  I know that she is very nervous about going back to school and I don't blame her.  We all are.  She says she is keen to go back and seems determined, and when Em puts her mind to something she does it and does it well, but I don't really know what is going to happen with her.  She is much happier and having fun with Sindy, and I hope she will make more friends with better kids this time around.
We bbqed rib eye steak with Crying Tiger marindade, lamb sausages, rump steak and chilli and lime chicken, with potato salad and a green salad and pavlova for dessert.  Had way too much food since Em wasn't here.
Well I have stuff to do, and then I have to take Phill to Junee for work.  I like that long (50km) drive back home on my own, I do my best thinking on country roads.
