It's Over

Emily's formal schooling is over.  I can't live like this, can't fight with her anymore.  We need to find an alternative and we're looking into distance education although the DE has just told us that it has to happen through the school, which refuses to return my phone calls.  I haven't told her, but if they won't come to the party I will unschool her.  I can't do homeschooling, we've been there and done that, but unschooling might just work for her.  It will be interesting to see what the DE will do when she just doesn't go back to school.  Toothless tigers is what they are, the law regarding education is ridiculous.  When I decided, because of the totally inadequate schools in Junee, to homeschool them both they hounded me by phone for weeks until I decided to talk to them.  But now, when I really need serious help there is none.  NONE.  Australians this is what you are paying your taxes for, a totally useless education system that only caters for the mainstream.  My children will shine in spite of the poor excuse for education in this state.

I am right there with you and what you say about schools and most other government run systems these days is sadly too true -

Some of the most successful people have come from no education. Good luck.

Trish, if the school won't answer your calls...go to Emily's school and demand a home tutor.
At sixteen you need a school permit to work part time in the States and at age fifteen just what do they think she can do?????

One of my daughters quit school at sixteen and now blames me.
She told me that I could have stopped her. HA!!!!!
Miss Free Bird herself.

Your reader is right though.
Some of us do well without the formal education through grade twelve, but stilllllllllllllll.
It depends on each individual.

Isn't there a head department in your country that controls education?
Having Emily home all day and sleeping in late isn't going to be good. (((hugs)))

YES the head dept that controls education is in fact the Board of Studies NOT the Education Dept who run the schools. The education dept are the ones who knock homeschooling as they miss out on a bit of school funding for each child that homeschools. And the school in general will chase after you if you pull your kids out. IF you are registered homeschoolers they can't touch you no matter how much crap they spout at you.

The law in NSW states that ALL children between the ages of 6 and 17 must be enrolled in formal education. Homeschooling is considered formal education in NSW, schools do not always think so.

Not all schools provide Distance Ed Trish, so if your school is being difficult then try googling for a school that offers it. I know there are a few around as I looked into before.

You need to understand though, that Distance Ed is basically school at home. She will still get all the work she would do in school and you would have to make sure she does it and you will still answer to the Education dept.

you know where I am if you need any help. :-)

Good luck ((((HUGS))))

I feel for you and agree that the education system only caters for the mainstream. Google Sir Kenneth Robinson and watch one of his TED talks.

I cant help but notice that what Emily wants, Emily manages to get, so do you really need to worry about this child? I am not being cruel Im trying to point out that she has got great survival and life skills.
