Unanswered Prayers

I talked to Matthew (Kate's bio father) at length last night on Facebook after texting him yesterday to tell him something funny.  His number somehow disappeared off my phone and my son in law is also called Matt.  So I was texting Matt innocuous things like wishing him Happy New Year, thinking it was the other Matt.  When I told him I was writing to his mother and would she like Kate's postal address in case she wanted to write to her Matt replied "I think you have the wrong person, this is your son in law".  I said "Yikes sorry, oh well happy birthday for Sunday anyway" and he said "Thanks Dragon (his affectionate?? name for me) and nobody says yikes anymore, that's so 2012".  He's a funny bugger.  Anyway the other Matt and I ended up reminiscing for a while last night about our time together.  I thought he was the love of my life, we were together for just two years and he left when I got pregnant with Kate, and has never seen her in person.  As I've said, Kate isn't keen on being in touch with him but I think she is curious and I would hate her to lose the opportunity in case something ever happened to him.  He broke my heart and it was years before I could even bring myself to date again.  But after talking to him last night that old Garth Brooks song kept popping into my head and I felt so glad that things didn't work out for us, and felt SO glad I married my husband.  Matthew is harmless enough, and to his credit he admitted he did the wrong thing in abandoning us, and said he was sorry and I believe him, but he just has no personality.  He is 45, single, never married and still lives with his mother, as does his older brother.  I mean, really?  Anyway I'm happy that we are on good terms and I do hope Kate will connect with him and especially his mother who has no other grandchildren and probably never will.  I wrote to her yesterday and am happy to be in touch with her if that's what she wants.  She was wonderful to Katy and she and her late husband used to come and visit Kate every two weeks, and spoiled her and loved her.  Sadly Katy doesn't remember them, as I cut contact when I met Phill and she wasn't happy about me moving on and getting married etc.  It was a difficult time and we all made mistakes.
Kate is like Matthew in personality, very hard headed, and a seeming lack of emotion and empathy that doesn't run too deep, it's like a protection mechanism or something.
Today it got up to the forecast 41C.  Poor Harley, who still isn't 100% after her ordeal was really suffering with her fluffy coat.  I put ice in Max's water bowl and took a fan out there for him but he seemed scared and I ended up putting him in with the kids for a while, then he had his dinner inside and went back out.  He was in the laundry last time I looked so he must have figured out the fan was helping.  I even took a jug of iced water out for the magpies who were hanging around on the side verandah looking thirsty.  They bathe in it and drink it as well.
It was even too hot to go in the pool, nobody wanted to go down there and the water is like a bath anyway.  I might go in later.
I talked to my Alison and Katy last night which was lovely.  Katy was almost in tears she was so tired and worn out with working so much and luckily she has the weekend off.  She doesn't take care of herself properly and it drives me nuts being so far away from her.
Phill's away working and has back to back jobs for a while which is good after things being so quiet. I'm hoping to take the kids out a bit this coming week.  They've opened a bowling alley in Wagga so we might do that, or go to the movies.  We are dying to take the boat out, we just have to find a day when Phill isn't working.
Tomorrow is my sister and brother in law's 40th wedding anniversary.  I was her junior bridesmaid.  She is the only one of us five kids who still has her original spouse.  I love my BIL he is more like a brother to me, I was only about 11 when they met.  Wonder if we'll make it to 40?  We'll be 74ish.  We probably will, nobody else would have us. ;)
