Census 2011

Last night Phill said in a slightly panicked voice as he saw the Census form on the coffee table, "Aren't you going to fill in the form this year?"  I said "Of course"  He said "But aren't they coming tomorrow night?"  Who are "they"?  Does he think it's like Christmas and someone like Santa comes in the night and does....what??  Sometimes it's slightly amusing watching him slowly slide into mental decline.
The car needs a whole new transmission which will cost upwards of $3600.  This apparently is a direct result of not being maintained properly.  Phill has never taken care of things.  I think this is because he's never not had things.  I have had times in my life when I had nothing but a suitcase and my wits.  I have been on at least one occasion, one night away from being homeless.  And even after all these years, I never take anything for granted and if I'm lucky enough to have something nice I surely take good care of it.  I foolishly left the car stuff up to him, but no more, I have done some research and have marked down when the car needs certain servicing and will be more proactive in getting that done.  So we're without a car, for now.  I think Phill is going to get the lunchtime train into Wagga and hire one, but if not we'll manage.  After the horrible times we've had recently having no car is nothing.  We all have legs.
So tonight is Census night.  I am fascinated by it all, by the history we're marking down, by the process of it all.  Last census we were living in Western Australia and there were five of us, the one before that we were in Junee and the kids were all little.  Call me old fashioned but I will never complete my form online while there is still the paper form.
I did a few more units of my course yesterday, locked myself in the bedroom so I could concentrate away from Phill's tv watching, and got totally engrossed in it and didn't want to pack up to walk down and met the kids from school.  THAT is what I want, something that I love doing so much I can barely tear myself away from it.  My brain is slowly getting back into shape, I can feel it happening.
Emily has settled down and is doing pretty much what she's supposed to.  I know school is still really difficult for her, mostly of her own doing and thus she needs to sort that out herself, but she is being very brave and I'm so proud of her.  I promised that if she kept it up she could have her hair done on Friday. She wants it dyed black but I am drawing the line there.  I couldn't get in to get mine done yesterday so I made an appointment for tomorrow and I will talk to them about what they can do for Em's hair and get some ideas.  It's long and pretty, but quite thick and hard to manage now.  I want to have something completely different for mine, and I'm going to enjoy the process no matter what drama happens between now and then.
I tried my homemade bath milk last night and it was surprisingly good.  The lavender and patchouli scents were relaxing and it left my skin feeling soft and clean.  Might experiment with some other oils and make some up in some pretty jars for Christmas presents.  But then again, I might not.
Those ear plugs are miracle workers.  I am sensitive to noise at night even when Phill is not home, or isn't snoring and the ear plugs just give me a better sleep.  I am in the habit of rising before six am now if I get to bed by ten, just to have some quiet time alone as the sun rises, with my computer and my pot of tea.

Funny about the census. There was a man here for the census and he just left. I did the general last year and thenthis year we received one that was much more specific and I needed Tim to fill it outvas I don't pay the bills. Tim of course put it off and so, a census representative was just here getting all recorded.

I never got a mail census form when the US conducted it last year. They kept saying somebody would come round to collect info from people who didn't mail theirs in so I thought we'd get counted that way. Nobody ever came. We missed it. And now I feel as though we will be lost in history somewhere. Future family members will wonder what the hell was the matter with us that we couldn't fill out a simple census form. We're here. We exist. Even though we didn't do a census form.
