Australia of course sent rescue and other aid workers to NZ today to help out with the earthquake efforts. We are and have long been brothers and sisters, so much closer we are to New Zealand than any other Commonwealth country. It was lovely to see a Kiwi rescue worker say "The ANZAC spirit is alive and well".
For me, in all the tragic stories, the saddest was that a creche was on the bottom floor of the CTV building and early this afternoon, our time, the news came through that no further searches would be held in that building. Meaning that nobody could have survived either the quake or the resultant fire. So little kids died and probably their mums did too.
I have always loved the Kiwi nation, met many people through an ex boyfriend's rugby club years ago (he was an arsehole but let's not go there), and I've known several of them on the good old www. But I have to say that today I have a new admiration for them. Staunch, efficient, caring, kind in a way I think even our Aussies would find it hard to live up to. They got their arses into gear in lightning time to provide everything the displaced could want in the city by last night.
Life is so random, it could take us at any time.
Fuck I'd hate to be a rescue worker in Christchurch tonight.

The sights I saw would make a wreck of me.
One has to be a special kind of person to be able to focus on rescuing as they encounter so much horror.
Bless them one and all where ever they are doing their job!
Exactly what you say - such awful stuff
